SAN FERNANDO CITY, July 9 (PIA) – The news on Vigan City making to the Top 21 of the New7 wonder cities of the world race immediately went viral moments after it was released on social media networks. But the campaign continues for Vigan to reach the New7 wonders-slot.
Moments after the announcement in the New7wonders website on July 7 (July 8, 3 a.m. in the Philippines), a picture of Bernard Weber, founder-President of New7Wonders, was shown on Vigan’s facebook page (Vigan for New7wonders cities) holding a scroll which revealed the 21 qualifying cities at the Torre de Belem in Lisbon, Portugal.
It was in Portugal where the first New7Wonders campaign declaration event took place on July 7, 2007.
Weber’s photo holding the scroll had since been shared on social media over a hundred times.
“This is not the end of the road. We’ve only just Vigan (a play on a vintage song We’ve Only Just Begun),” a facebook post on Vigan’s page read.
Vigan Mayor Eva Marie Singson, who was out of the country when the list was released, sent a text message to city hall thanking Biguenos and Filipinos around the world for helping Vigan’s bid.
Edgar de la Cruz, Vigan’s tourism officer, said the mayor was overwhelmed with the news.
“Vigan will now bring the campaign to a bigger platform. We will make Vigan’s presence felt in the national stage,” de la Cruz said.
He said campaign materials like tarpaulins will be posted on major road networks like Edsa in Metro Manila to generate more waves until Vigan makes it to the final cut of Top 7 countries.
De la Cruz said the city government has received the nod of Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) for Vigan to make use of MMDA’s led billboards for Vigan’s campaign.
He added the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) has also approved the placement of promotions materials in all Philippine airports and seaports nationwide.
“If Vigan was not felt much before the initial round of eliminations, this time, the city will be all over the place until we get to the New7 wonder cities-list,” de la Cruz said.
He said Vigan’s campaign materials will be on MMDA and DOTC approved-sites for three months or until October in time for the announcement of the Top 14 countries.
The other cities in the Top 21 list are Bangkok, Barcelona, Beirut, Chicago, Doha, Durban, Havana, Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur, La Paz, London, Mendoza, Mexico City, Mumbai, Perth, Quito, Reykjavik, Saint Petersburg, Seoul, and Shenzhen.
Vigan had made use of social media networks to promote its campaign. It also tapped the support of private and government media to ask Filipinos around the world to vote for Vigan.
It also brought the campaign to the world using Philippine embassies and consulates. By Christina Arzadon (MCA-PIA1 La Union)
